1^stDay | Arrival

On your arrival in Ulaanbaatar, you will meet with your guide and driver who will travel during the whole journey. Then you will be transferred to hotel. /Depending on estimated arrival time, the tour begins/

2^ndDay | Khuvsgul Lake /flight/

Today we have domestic flight to Khuvsgul Lake taking over 2 hours flight to Murun town, center of Khuvsgul province. After arrival, you will meet our local drivers who travel with you during the trip around Khuvsgul Lake, known as “Dark Blue Pearl”, which listed as the second fresh water lake in Central Asia. The Lake is one of the beautiful sites to where not only Mongolians, but also foreigners love to travel. For the first day we will accommodate at the coast of the lake after 100 km of driving.

3^rdDay | Reindeer riders and Shaman eternal ceremony

Today we have a trip towards taiga so as to meet and discover the unique living style of Reindeer riders of taiga, known as “Tsaatan people”. In some ways, we would need to take horse riding or trekking through green grasslands and forests. In the evening of the same day we see Shaman eternal ceremony offering great experience to our guests and Mongolians. Enjoy and have experience from the special performance on your own only in Mongolia.

GOLDEN EAGLE FESTIVAL 2011

Join us for an unforgettable journey to the Golden Eagle Festival in Bayan-Ulgii Province, located in the Altai Mountains of Western Mongolia. Each year Kazakh hunters from near and far attend in the festival with their Golden Eagles, known as berkut, to enter them into competitions testing speed, agility, and accuracy. Ceremonies, dance performances, a parade in the provincial capital’s city square, and a Kazakh play in honor of the hunters and their eagles are all a part of this unique experience.

1^stDay |Arrival

2^ndDay | Bayan Ulgii Province /Flight/

After breakfast we fly to Bayan Ulgii, Mongolia’s far western province, which is mostly inhabited by Kazakh people. The Kazakh have brought with them their rich cultural heritage, music, handicrafts and the ancient tradition of hunting with Golden Eagles. We will land at Ulgii, the provincial capital, where we visit the local museum providing an insight into the diverse ethnic groups, the history, and the flora and fauna of the region. It is optional that we may visit the local mosque and market, but depending on possible time. Stay overnight in Mongolian ger at tourist camp.

3^rdDay | Eagle Hunting Festival

Today we enjoy and participate in the first day of the Golden Eagle Festival. About 80 Eagle trainers will attend in the festival to demonstrate their own and their eagle’s skills and abilities. The festival will begin with the hunters displaying their traditional Kazakh dress and their eagle’s equipment and ornaments. Stay overnight in camp.

4^thDay | Eagle Hunting Festival

After breakfast the second day of the festival includes competitions and presentations of the special relationship between the trainer and his bird of prey, which is often considered as a family member. You will be able to experience a number of Kazakh traditions on first-hand. Mingle with the hunters, watch them pampering their birds and cheer for the competitors against the backdrop of the high Altai Mountains. Stay overnight in camp.

5^thDay | Eagle Trainer’s Family

After breakfast we leave the festival for visit to Amanbek’s family, a eagle trainer, and travel towards the Hovd River, stopping for lunch on the shores of Bayanuur Lake /100 km/. By early afternoon we will reach the house of the trainer, one of the province’s most well-known eagle trainers. You will learn from him about the ancient tradition of training for golden eagles and hunting with golden eagles in the wilderness of western Mongolia. In the evening you will join the family in their ger, and enjoy the traditional music and dancing of the Kazakh. Dinner and overnight in tourist camp.

6^thDay | Eagle Trainer’s Family

After breakfast we will ride with Amanbek /the eagle trainer/ to the nearby mountains so as to watch him in a training session with one of his eagles. After enjoying a traditional lunch at his home, we will head towards Ulgii town. This evening is for relax that you can enjoy a hot shower at the local baths, which are very comfortable and well supplied with hot water. And then prepare for flight to Ulaanbaatar for the next day. Stay overnight in a ger camp.

7^thDay | Ulaanbaatar /Flight/

Today we depart for the flight Ulgii-Ulaanbaatar city. Upon your arrival in Ulaanbaatar you will be transferred to your hotel and then you can have some rest as pleasant as you wish. Depending on flight arrival time, some sightseeing such as museums and historical sites should be offered, but you decide. You can also go shopping in the city if you consider you have more energy. The day today is for your leisure, at all. Overnight in hotel

8^thDay | Terelj National Park

Today we drive to Terelj National Park, which is the most beautiful destination around the capital city, where you enjoy beautiful nature and interesting rock formations. This site has already been seen as the best attraction for our guests because of its natural conditions. We also see the Turtle Rock, called as “Melkhi Khad” by locals, which is an specific rock formation looks like a huge turtle. Then we take a visit to Chingis Khaan (Genghis Khaan) Monument Complex, which is located in 50 km from the capital city and is 50 m high in total. Stay overnight in Mongolian ger camp.

9^th Day | Ulaanbaatar-City Tour

Eagle Hunting |

Among many Kazakh traditions is the ancient art of hunting with trained birds of prey. The tradition is believed to originate in Central Asia some 6000 years ago and later on be adopted in Europe and other countries. This centuries old tradition is still practiced among Kazakhs of Bayan Ulgii province. 13th century historical chronicles relay records of Kubilai Khaan’s lavish hunting trips in autumn and winter involving thousands of people and horses. Falconers alone numbered more than 5,000.

For hunting purpose Kazakhs catch and train Golden Eagles, mighty birds of prey common throughout the Central Asia. These huge birds weight up to 6.5 kilograms with wingspan of seven or eight feet. The talons or claws on an eagle’s toes are curved and razor-sharp for catching and holding their prey. This gave eagles the name raptor which comes from a Latin word “rapere” meaning to grip or grasp.

Eagles are “birds of prey,” which means they hunt for their food. Unlike other birds, which eat seeds or insects flying short distance, eagles fly great distances in order to find game. Therefore eagles mastered the skill of soaring.

They ride the warm flows of air and can speed up to twenty miles per hour almost without effort.

The eagle’s eyesight is especially remarkable. With vision about eight times sharper than human, they can spot a fox or rabbit up to a mile away.

Usually Kazakh hunters go for female birds as they one third heavier than males and much more aggressive. Eagles can live up to 50 years but most hunters keep the birds for about 10 years and then release them back into the wild.

Eagle Training |

Hunters choose either to snatch a young, few months old chick from nest at mountain tops or lure a young birds with pigeons and trap them.

“Eagle chicks are more tame as they used to humans and do not attack children or sheep.

Early winter or the end of fall is considered to be the best season for hunting as foxes and other game acquire winter furs. Usually, after the first snow falls, the hunter rides a horse, holding hunting eagles on his left arm, and wanders among the rugged, snow topped covered mountains. Often young boys will accompany the hunters and help them to flush the game.

As soon as the hunter spots an escaping fox or marmot, he will send the hunting eagle into the air towards the quarry. The bird first goes up to size up the target and then goes down in one long but swift strike falling right on the spine of the escaping animal. She catches the prey with her iron paws and until the hunter approaches.

Though the gain from eagle hunting is rather shy, it is an amusing sport and entertainment and thus is very popular among the Kazakhs who use the fox furs to make distinctive national winter fur hats. Hunters take great pride in having a clever, quick and valiant hunting eagle.

For last few years Bayan Ulgii Kazakhs held in early October /or some time of a year/ the Eagle Hunting Festival, a colorful and picturesque event attracting the best hunters and birds, and an important celebration for the local community.

The festival begins with each hunter displaying the hunting outfits and elaborate, beautifully adorned accessories. Later, the hunting eagles are evaluated for their skills. The eagles are released from a rock cliff, while their owners stand below and signal for them to land upon their arms, as they do during hunting. Those with the fastest times and best technique are awarded the highest scores.

Golden Eagle Festival |

Each year Kazakh hunters from near and far attend in the festival with their Golden Eagles, known as berkut, to enter them into competitions testing speed, agility, and accuracy. Ceremonies, dance performances, a parade in the provincial capital’s city square, and a Kazakh play in honor of the hunters and their eagles are all a part of this unique experience.

This annual festival, which celebrates the Golden Eagle as well as the hunters’ traditional culture, is arranged by the local Kazakh community and our team.
This expedition into the rugged Altai Mountains also includes opportunities to ride on horseback alongside the hunters, as well as visits to a local mosque, town market, provincial museum, and archaeological site.

We also discover Lake Khuvsgul, one of the most beautiful places in Mongolia, considered as the second largest fresh water lake in Central Asia. Lake Khuvsgul is inhabited by nine species of fish including the Siberian grayling and lenok. Fishing and sport fishing are becoming popular in the lake area. Taiga Fauna and Flora, Tsatan, practicing raindeer breeding are the main attractions for tourists.

Moreover, joining this trip, you have the chance to participate in Naadam Festival (mini Naadam) organized only for your tour group or your family. The festival consists of three mainly national games such as horse racing, wrestling, and archery.

During the trip, you also experience Mongolian nomad life style keeping its features even in XXI century having some traditional game, riding on horseback with nomads. You also visit more attractions of Mongolia, including Erdene Zuu Monastery, Khustai National Park, Khorgo & Terkhi National Park, Tsenkher Hot Spa. Today we will participate in and see Mongolian Naadam Festival, known as “mini festival” among Mongolians. Today, our journey heads to the lost capital city of Genghis Khaan, named Khar Khorin. The main attraction of the town is Erdene Zuu, ancient Buddhism center of all Mongolians, where we firstly visit on our arrival. The park is rich in beautiful scenery of mountains, cliffs, rapid streams, rivers, lakes, extinct volcanoes, green forests and pastures, where the long-haired yaks and horses pasture. Today we have hiking to Khorgo extinct volcano where we can observe whole the area from the peak of the volcano. We also discover some secret caves having their own oral stories among local people. Then we will drive to the Lake Terkhiin Tsagaan, rich in kinds of rare bird species, not only in Mongolia, but also in Asia. Day 1 | Ulaanbaatar city

On arrival in Ulaanbaatar, you will be met with our staffs and be transferred to hotel. Depending on your arrival time, we will visit Gandan Monastery which is the main center of Buddhism in Mongolia and see UB from the top Zaisan Memorial which locates on the top of the hill. Take photos. And visit The Zanabazar Museum of Fine Art.

In the evening, welcome dinner and overnight in hotel.

Day 2 | Drive to Bayabchandmaini county /visit Mongolian Nomadic family/

Today, we drive to a Mongolian nomadic family living in Bayanchandmani county. They breed five kind of Mongolian livestock, such as goat, sheep, horse, cow and camel. Have lunch with the family. Get experience with Mongolian horses and nomadic lifestyle.

Welcome dinner, overnight in your own Mongolian traditional ger /yurt/ near the nomads.

Today is for your experience about nomads life style, try cow milking, herding sheep and goat in pasture with riding on horseback. We also have experience about how nomads make Mongolian traditional drinks, such as airag, tarag etc, and nomads cooking, such as noodle soup, Khorhog, Boodog etc. During the days with nomads, you will put on Mongolian deel /Mongolian traditional clothes/, if you want.

Day 4 | Free day with Nomads

Mongolian yurt /Mongolian ger/ is very suitable and easy for nomads to move place to place, depending on weather, pasture and the state of precipitation. Today, you will move your ger to another place with Yak cart and then assemble it back. The family will show how to do it and help you. Mongolian ger consists of some wooden tools and felt covers.

Day 5 | Ulaanbaatar city

Today, we will drive back to Ulaanbaatar city, and then transfer to hotel. After lunch, shopping in cashmere and souvenir stories in the city. In the evening, we will see Mongolian Folk Song Concert displays many kinds of special performances, such as Mongolian long song, throat song, and Horse-head fiddle etc.

Welcome dinner and overnight at hotel.

The trip, we arrange every summer, gives you a great opportunity to experience Mongolian nomads’ culture, traditions and hospitality. During the holiday with nomads, you will live in your own Mongolian ger and put on Mongolian traditional clothes /Deel/. You also experience how they herd their livestock and cook traditional cook and drinks, as well, you move your Mongollian traditional ger to another place in assistance with nomadic family.

Mongolian yurt /ger/ Info |

The yurt /ger/ consists of a circular wooden frame carrying a felt cover. The felt is made from the wool of the flocks of sheep that accompany the pastoralists. The timber to make the external structure is not to be found on the treeless steppes, and must be traded for in the valleys below.

The frame consists of one or more lattice wall-sections, a door-frame, roof poles and a crown. Some styles of yurt have one or more columns to support the crown. The (self-supporting) wood frame is covered with pieces of felt. Depending on availability, the felt is additionally covered with canvas and/or sun-covers. The frame is held together with one or more ropes or ribbons. The structure is kept under compression by the weight of the covers, sometimes supplemented by a heavy weight hung from the center of the roof. They vary regionally, with straight or bent roof-poles, different sizes, and relative weight.

It is designed to be dismantled and the parts carried on camels or yaks to be rebuilt on another site.

Nomadic family info |

An average family consists of over 4-5 persons and live in a ger all together. Even though, they move about 6-8 times a year, it depends on the weather, pasture and the state of precipitation. If the weather is good and it rains in enough rate for pasture, there is no use to move place to place.

This holiday with nomads, you will be provided by extra Mongolian gers.

Our journey will begin with a half an hour flight to Dalanzadgad town, center of South Gobi province. On your arrival, we visit nomad family to experience nomad life style in Gobi Desert. You also take a trip with Mongolian horse and camel riding. Enjoy the beauty of scenery, breathing fresh air. In the evening, relaxing, dinner and overnight in Mongolian Ger at camp.

3^rdDay | Vulture’s Gorge Valley

Today we drive from our base camp to Vulture’s Gorge Valley, known as “Yoliin Am” in Gurvan saikhan mountain range. As a short trekking, you will walk along the narrow rocky valley, which is home to many species of animals, birds, and plants, gives some chances to observe Siberian ibex, wild sheep, and some kinds of rare birds. The most amazing is you will find frozen ice even in summer days of Gobi desert after following streams. During this excursion, you can take camels and horses for your trekking. Picnic lunch is provided by base camp. Stay overnight in the base camp.

4^th Day | Singing Dunes

The journey continues west along the Altai Mountain range until we reach Khongoriin Els or Singing Dunes because of the tons of sand, making a strange sound similar to that of distant aircraft. The Sand dune is one of the highlights of Mongolia. These are Mongolia’s largest sand dunes. Locally they are called the ‘Singing Dunes’. The driving is estimated about 6 hours long. We will stay overnight in a Ger camp close to the dunes. See the special formation of sand dunes and admire the wilderness. Welcome dinner and overnight at tourist camp.

5^th Day | Camel Riding Exploration

After some long days of driving we will have the opportunity to use a different type of transport. We will be riding on camels today to explore these marvelous sand-dunes. Mongolian two-humped camels are very comfortable to ride, as they walk slowly and gently. We will be well supported by the humps, sitting comfortably between them and our local staff will help you how to drive the camels. Our camel wrangler will take us to the sand-dunes. We will take our lunch with our camels and ride back to the camp in the evening. Welcome dinner and overnight.

6^th Day | Khermen Zav, Dinosaur Fossils Exploration

The burial places of dinosaur are in Gobi at many different places under different colored earth banks. Until today you can discover much with good luck. Mongolia belongs to the paleontology very well investigated countries in Asia. Often paleontology inspired guests come into in Mongolia. The main attractions are not only the dinosaur burial places but also furthermore other petrified trees, plants, birds, eggs, nests and petrified groups of animals of different insects, eddy lots, fish, mammals from the 200-300 million years ago. You walk by the former Jurassic Park and astonishment in the burial places, remnants and petrified traces. This day we will discover a well-known area called as “Khermen zav”. In the evening, tent camping.

7^th Day | Bayanzag Dinosaur cliffs+ Saxual forrest

Today we drive to Bayanzag, which in Mongolian means ‘a place of many saxaul bushes’, was first called ‘The Flaming Cliffs’ by Roy Chapman Andrews, the American dinosaur hunter and adventurer who made vital finds of dinosaur eggs and skeletons at the base of the vivid red bluffs, which stand alone in a vast empty expanse of land and sky. Chapman himself was something of a rogue – said by some to be the man on whom the film character ‘Indiana Jones’ was based. He lived an adventurous, self-aggrandizing life across much of this part of the world. At Bayanzag it is the landscape, in addition to the rich dinosaur history, which is very impressive – an intense evocation of Mongolia’s great emptiness. Welcome dinner and stay overnight in tourist camp.

Start the tour on horseback. Ride for over 30 km heading to north-west. We will ride through a beautiful sand dunes and grasslands. On the way, taking photos and visiting Mongolian nomadic family. Tent camping overnight. All meals will be provided by our professional cook. And Mongolian horseman will help you how to experience Mongolian horses.

Day 4 | Tour on horse back

Continue riding on horseback. Enjoy the scenery which is still vast steppe covered by grass. Arrive at Khoshoo Tsaidam, place of ancient stone monuments erected during Turkic dynasty existed in 6-8th century, A.C. Visit the monuments complex renovated. Overnight in tent.

Day 5 | Lake Ugii

Horse riding /over 35 kms/ to The Lake Ugii which is one of attractive lakes in Central Mongolia. The lake is small one which is rich in fish like lenok and pike. The lake is said to be the most beautiful lake by the natives. Hiking and ship adventures around the lake and taking photos.

Day 6 | Hugnu Khaan

Day 7 | Orkhon River

The Orkhon river rises in the Khangai Mountain Range and flows 1,124 kilometers to join the Selenge river in northen Mongolia and so to Lake Baikal. The main tributaries of the Orkhon river are the Tamir and Yeroo rivers which rise in the Khentii and Khangai mountain ranges.

The Orkhon river has numerous species of fish, such as Pike, Mirror Carp, Baikal Sturgeon, Taimen, Sig, River Perch, Siberian Umber, Roach, Ide, Bull Ide, Golden Carp, Amur Catfish and Burbot.

Day 8 | Khar Khorin

Early in the morning, drive to Khar Khorin which was founded in 1220 by Chingis Khaan, and completed by his son, Ogedai, after his death. Explore Erdene Zuu monastry which is the ancient centre of Buddhism in Mongolia. Overnight at tourist camp.

Day 9 | Hustai National Park

After breakfast, we will drive to Hustai National Park to see Wild Horse, well-known to the world as the name-Prjewalskii Horse. Traveling through green grassland with a stop at beautiful sand dunes-Elsen Tasarkhai and camel riding if you want.

Relax at the tourist camp and overnight.

Day 10 | Ulaanbaatar City

After breakfast, 110 km driving to Ulaanbaatar City. After lunch in local restaurant, we then see Sukhbaatar square. Remained time is for leisure.

After crossing River Tuul, you see the Great Monument of Chinngis Khaan /50 m high/. Welcome dinner and overnight at tourist camp.

Day 3 | Terelj National Park

Today, we will travel back to your basic tourist camp with ox cart, with enjoying beautiful nature and fresh air condition. / Picnic Lunch/ After arrival, relaxing at the camp and welcome dinner. Overnight.

Day 4 | Turtle Rock-Ulaanbaatar city

After early breakfast, we will drive to Turtle Rock or called Melkhi Khad by the locals. It is an interesting rock formation looking like a turtle. The Turtle rock is set in valley. It takes about 20 minutes drive from the camp.

After exploring Turtle Rock, we drive back to Ulaanbaatar city. Then, shopping and in the evening, enjoy Mongolian Folk Music Concert which has various kinds of great performances, such as Mongolian long song, horse-head fiddle, and throat singing etc.

WILD HORSES & TERELJ NATIONAL PARK

During the trip we will visit Hustai National Park which is home to the world’s only naturally surviving wild horse /the Przewalski horse or takhi in Mongolian/. And we also visit Terelj National Park where we visit local Mongolian nomad family and have optional tours including trekking, horse or camel riding. Visitors can take leisurely strolls on meadows carpeted with edelweiss and a dazzling variety of other wild flowers, view fascinating rock formations against a backdrop of pine covered mountains and wander along the wooded banks of a mountain stream.

DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1 | Terelj National Park

On your arrival, you will be met with our staffs and begin your journey with Terelj National park which is one of the most beautiful sites around Ulaanbaatar. You will stay in Mongolian ger and time is for your leisure. If you wish, experiencing Mongolian horses and camel riding tours, and trekking are for your pleasure. Today, we will see Turtle Rock and visit local nomadic family.

Welcome dinner and overnight in Mongolian ger at camp.

Day 2 | Hustai National Park

After early breakfast, we drive to Hustai National Park which lies in the foothills of the southern Khentii Mountain Range about 100km south west of Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia. Here, we will explore the national park and see the unique wild horses, worldwide known as Prjewalskii Horse. Have rest and overnight at camp.

Day 3 | Ulaanbaatar city

After breakfast, we will drive to Ulaanbaatar. On our arrival, we will have lunch in barbeque restaurant and visit Gandan Monastery and National History Museum. In the evening, we will see Mongolian Folk Music concert where you can find more about the country’s culture and art.
